Licensed - Bonded - Insured

You've heard this phrase a thousand times, but what does it actually mean to you?

"Licensed" is the process of passing a background check, business exam, and trade exam with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (aka ROC) https://roc.az.gov/.

"Bonded" is the process of posting a surety bond with the ROC, which states that in the event a licensed contractor is unable to complete a project, the ROC and Surety Bonding Company will assist the homeowner in finding someone else to complete the project (up to the bond limit). In addition, by hiring a licensed contractor, the ROC maintains a "Recovery Fund" which helps the homeowner in the event their licensed contractor leaves them high and dry. If you hire an unlicensed contractor, you're assuming the risk completely. The only thing the ROC can do is pursue the individual for operating without a license. There is no funding available for the homeowner.

"Insured" is having proper insurance coverage to protect the business, employees and the homeowner.

If the contractor is uninsured you could have potential liability for the workers if they got hurt while on your property. Be sure to ask your contractor if they have BOTH General Liability and Workers Compensation insurance and request to see their current certificate.

We encourage you to research the contractor and make sure they're legitimate. Here's a link to the ROC search page https://roc.az.gov/contractor-search: You can search by a persons name or the company they are representing.

When in doubt, check it out.
